Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urges India to respect Bangladesh's democratic aspirations

BNP Calls for Election Roadmap to Restore Public Confidence

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on the interim administration  to announce an election roadmap to restore trust among the public.

“Announcing elections will rebuild public confidence,” he said.

“We demand elections in the interest of the nation, not just for the BNP,” Fakhrul said during a discussion in Dhaka on Tuesday.

He emphasized that if the BNP wins the election, it plans to form a “national government with participation from all parties.”

Fakhrul noted that the BNP and its allies had already submitted reform proposals and urged the interim government to evaluate which of these should be implemented before the election is held.

He stressed that reforms focused on the Election Commission, public administration, and the judiciary are critical to preparing for credible national elections.

“The elected representatives will address the remaining reforms,” he said, reiterating that announcing a clear election roadmap would help restore public trust in the government.

Fakhrul expressed his party’s desire for the interim administration, installed after the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid a mass uprising in August, to succeed in its mission. “We do not want Hasina’s return,” he declared.

Concerns Over Governance and Political Inexperience

Referring to ongoing public unrest, including factory fires and street protests, Fakhrul criticized the interim government’s lack of political acumen, claiming it is worsening the situation.

“Factories, which are vital national assets, are being set on fire. Why can’t they address this? Because they lack political strength,” Fakhrul said, pointing to the interim administration’s advisers as lacking essential political experience.

“Politics requires careful calculations and strategies,” he added.

Fakhrul also warned that delays in resolving current issues would only escalate them and create new challenges. He criticized the government’s handling of protests by students from Titumir College, questioning why no preventive measures had been taken. “Were they not capable of anticipating this?” he asked.

Call for Clear Plans

The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, assumed power on August 5 after Sheikh Hasina fled to India during a mass uprising. Despite initial assurances, the government has yet to provide a concrete plan for the next general election.

Instead, it has stated that elections will only be held after completing its reform agenda.

Fakhrul concluded by reiterating the urgency of a roadmap, urging the government to prioritize the nation’s interest and restore public confidence through timely and decisive action.
