Dhaka – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday called on the Indian government and people to refrain from using anti-Bangladesh sentiments in their domestic political agenda.
Addressing the recent attack on the Bangladesh consulate in Agartala, Tripura, by a group of Hindu activists, Fakhrul condemned the incident and expressed hope that India would respect the democratic aspirations of the people of a “new Bangladesh.”
“We urge the Indian government and its people not to use hatred towards Bangladesh as a tool in their domestic politics,” Fakhrul said.
Such actions could harm the long-standing friendship between Bangladesh and India.
He described the attack by members of the organization “Hindu Sangharsh Samity” as a premeditated act.
The incident involved intruding into the premises of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission, lowering and burning the Bangladeshi flag, and vandalizing the property — clear violations of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, Fakhrul noted.
Fakhrul further expressed optimism that India would return leaders who sought refuge in India during what he termed the “fascist Awami League regime” and support efforts to hold them accountable through fair trials.
