Dhaka – Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma said on Tuesday India is committed to maintaining a stable, constructive relationship with Bangladesh.
“We are eager to engage with Bangladesh’s interim government,” Verma told reporters after being summoned by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He was called to the ministry by Acting Foreign Secretary Reaz Hamidullah following an incident at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala on Monday.
Angry mob carried out an attack on the Agartala consulate by a Hindu group that creates tension between the two neighbouring nations. Bangladesh termed the attack pre-planned and crticised the role of the local law enforcement agencies in containing the situation.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Verma emphasized India’s interest in collaborating with Bangladesh to achieve shared aspirations for peace, security, and development.
Describing the bilateral relationship as “multifaceted and wide-ranging,” the envoy stressed the importance of looking beyond any single issue or agenda.
He highlighted the significant interdependencies between the two nations and expressed a desire to strengthen these ties for mutual benefit.
Earlier, Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain confirmed to the media that Verma had been invited to the ministry to discuss the incident.
