Bangladesh summons Indian envoy over attack on Agartala consulate

Dhaka – Indian High Commissioner Pranay Kumar Verma appeared at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Tuesday in response to a summon over the recent attack on the Bangladesh consulate in Agartala.

Verma met M. Riaz Hamidullah, the acting foreign secretary of Bangladesh, in the afternoon.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Tawhid Hossain confirmed to reporters that Verma has been asked to come.

The attack occurred during a protest on Monday, organized by a group called Hindu Sangharsh Samity in front of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, the capital on eastern Indian State of Tripura.

The demonstration was organized to protest against the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a leader of the United Sanatan Awakening Alliance in Bangladesh.

A group of Hindu youths stormed the consulate premises during the demonstration, forcibly lowering and tearing the Bangladeshi national flag. Video footage from the scene shows some protesters vandalizing signboards and setting them on fire, according to the BBC Bangla.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs in a statement later described the incident as “deeply regrettable,” stating, “Under no circumstances should diplomatic or consular facilities be targeted.”

It added that security at Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi, as well as its other diplomatic missions in India, is being enhanced.

Bangladesh’s interim government labeled the attack as “premeditated” and criticized the “inaction” of Indian law enforcement in preventing the incident at Agartala.

In a press statement, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “strong discontent” and called on the Indian government to ensure the security of all Bangladeshi diplomatic missions and personnel in India.

The ministry also urged India to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to prevent such violent acts in the future.

According to Indian news outlet The Telegraph, seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack.

Additionally, four police officers have faced disciplinary actions for negligence. A case has been filed in connection with the incident.
